A round racket puts the sweet spot in the middle of the face. That makes it the most forgiving shape to hit with and the easiest to control, which is why it is almost always the right answer for someone starting out.

It is also the kindest on your arm. The weight sits lower, closer to your hand, so the racket comes round faster at the net and puts less strain through the elbow over a long match.

What you give up is raw power on a smash. If you mostly win points through placement rather than force, that is not much of a sacrifice.
